So there’s life, and then there’s this

On the dawn of a great weekend of brain food i.e. the launch of both the Adelaide Festival of Ideas and the Festival of Unpopular Culture, and on the night that the FUC was having a launch meet and greet at the Metro, three young men braved the airwaves to bring you an episode of the Scenery original airing on October 7th.

Ryan, Seb and Luke offered up a little more of our feast of FUC culture with chats with author/designer Connor O’Brien and Mercury Cinema Event coordinator Ross McHenry.

I think most people involved with the Scenery came to know Connor O’Brien as the man behind the crisp design of On Dit 2010, of which he was a joint editor with Myriam Robin and Scenery big wig Mateo Szlapek-Sewillo respectively. He went on to release a collection of short stories entitled Quiet City (a personnel favorite), established The Bright Young, an internet culture blog, and do some web page design for for general good eggs. The FUC finds Mr O’Brien as a panelist for the talk Why Young People Don’t Read. The guys had a live in studio chat with Connor about the FUC talk, and any and all things Connor they could get out of him.

If you listened to the extended Josh Fanning chat we had a few episodes ago you might remember him mentioning a film festival showcasing film from our sister city Austin. Well the fruition is the Keep Austin Weird film festival put on by the Mercury Cinema, as part of the FUC. Austin, known for its live music scene, is facing some of the crisis Adelaide experienced some years ago (and ongoing) about real estate development being built close to live venues, hindering the music scene due to noise restrictions. Seb spoke with Ross McHenry, Mercury event co-orinator, about their intentions with the film festival, including a way to showcase the similarities between the two sister cities.

This weeks featured track comes from Idaho’s Youth Lagoon aka Trevor Powers with the track Posters. Seb describes him as a bedroom pop artist, Ryan asks: “What is a bedroom pop artist?”. Seb: “a guy in a bedroom that makes…art”. Touche. Here you go.

Cheers Big Ears,

Ryan, Seb & Luke. (and alex).
